From ancient times, through the transparent areas of the moon's crust the people of the moon had seen a beautiful planet like object in the sky. This was our earth. They believed that it was heaven (meaning "pleasure place" in their language)... the place that they will be born in after their death. This heaven was visible only from certain cities of the moon. The entire moon population was aware of this heaven from their school education and also from reports by people who had seen it. Like certain religious pilgrimages on earth, part of the purpose of the "moon people's continuous movement habit" was to observe this heaven during their lifetime. Most people had seen the heaven when they arrived at cities from which it was visible. However, it should be understood that the primary purpose of the movement habit was not to satisfy a need to see the heaven. The primary purpose of the habitual journeying was really not known. Whenever the moon people approached a place from where they could see this beautiful heaven in space for the first time, they had the background knowledge that getting to heaven was an event that would take place at the end of their lifetimes. They were therefore very excited and overwhelmed by it. However, when they actually got to look at the object which was heaven they would glare at it for long hours without blinking as it was so utterly beautiful and enjoyable to look at - like a glowing blue colored gem hanging by itself. Just looking at it gave them a sense of deep fulfillment.

However, weeks before New Horizons' scheduled arrival at its main target, it managed to reveal some strange secrets long-held in the deep freeze of our Solar System's outer limits. For their new study, released in June 2015, a team of planetary scientists collected all available NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) Hubble Space Telescope (HST) data on the four outer moons of Pluto in order to study this strange system in greater depth. Their observations reveal that at least a duo of Pluto's moons are not rotating on their axes in an orderly manner at all, but are instead in chaotic rotation while circling Pluto and its large companion moon, Charon--a moon-world that weighs-in at a hefty 11% of Pluto's mass. Charon is commonly thought to have once been a part of Pluto itself, before it was blasted off in a catastrophic collision with another object billions of years ago. The new study also suggests that one of the mystery moons has a bizarre jet-black coloring of unknown origin and composition. These truly amazing results appear in the June 4, 2015 issue of the journal Nature.
Triton also possesses a thin atmosphere composed mainly of nitrogen, and a smaller quantity of methane. This atmosphere probably is the result of Triton's cryovolcanism, which is enhanced by seasonal heating from the Sun. Although little is currently known of Pluto's atmosphere, it is thought to be primarily composed of nitrogen with some carbon monoxide and methane added to the mix--and it is extremely tenuous. Pluto's very thin atmosphere may exist as a gas only when Pluto is nearest to the Sun (perihelion). For most of Pluto's very long year, the atmospheric gases are frozen in the form of ice on its extremely frigid surface. One year on Triton is almost 248 Earth-years long--or 90,471 Earth-days!

Some of the images focus on the shallow center of a bizarre impact crater dubbed Pwyll. Impact rays and shattered pieces of material scattered over an immense area of the moon tell the tale of a sizeable meteorite that collided violently with Europa relatively recently--"only" about 10 to 100 million years ago. There is also darker debris chaotically scattered around Pwyll. This further suggests that the large crashing meteorite may have dug up some deeply buried material, and tossed it helter-skelter around the crater.
For a very long time, planetary scientists favored the scenario that the duo of potato-shaped Martian moons were probably snared asteroids. However, the pair's circular orbits at the equator indicated otherwise. The orbits of the little moons suggested that they had really formed from a giant impact billions of years ago. The new research, published in the July 4, 2016 issue of Nature Geoscience, proposes that a massive 2,000 kilometer protoplanet crashed into the primordial Mars. The horrendous impact resurfaced most of the Martian surface and hurled a mass of debris, more than 100 times the mass of both Phobos and Deimos, into orbit around the Red Planet.
In the fourth century BCE, Aristotle recorded that Mars vanished behind Earth's Moon during an occultation. This suggested that the planet was farther away than our Moon. The Greek astronomer, Ptolemy, who lived in Alexandria, attempted to solve the problem of the orbital motion of the Red Planet. Ptolemy's collective works and model on astronomy was presented in his multi-volume collection, titled the Almagest. The Almagest became the authoritative work on Western astronomy for the next 400 years. Ancient Chinese astronomers were also aware of the existence of Mars by no later than the fourth century BCE. In the fifth century CE, the Indian astronomical work titled Surya Siddhanta proposed a measurement of the estimated diameter of Mars. In East Asian cultures, Mars is usually referred to as the "fire star"--based on the Five Elements: fire, wood, metal, water, and earth.
