The gas giants are possibly composed entirely of gas and liquid, although they may have small solid cores. In contrast, the ice-giants have large solid cores and thinner atmospheres. The new study is based on data gathered by Cassini's radar instrument during flybys of Titan between 2007 and 2015.
However, the new findings also mean that scientists must come up with other explanations for why Earth's Moon is depleted of potassium, sodium, and other volatile elements. Additional explanations for this exist. One possible alternative explanation is that the volatile elements contained within the disk showered down onto the proto-Earth instead of escaping, or being part of lunar formation. Another explanation is that these volatile elements were part of our Moon when it first accreted from the post-collision disk but were later lost.
The most popular theory of lunar formation suggests that the Moon was born in a monumental collision between a Mars-size object named Theia and the ancient Earth--and that this ancient smash-up would have melted our primordial planet. This model further suggests that more than 40 percent of Earth's Moon is composed of the debris of the tragedy that was Theia. However, more recent theories indicate that our planet suffered from several giant collisions during its formation, with the lunar-forming crash being the last great grand finale event.
